Safari pricing confuses people because two quotes for "three nights in the Mara" can differ by a factor of five. The number that matters is cost per person per night, and what sits inside it.
2026 per-person, per-night ranges
- Budget, shared vehicle, simple camps: $180–$250
- Mid-range, private vehicle, good tented camps: $250–$400
- Premium lodges and private conservancies: $450–$800
- Top-tier luxury and exclusive-use camps: $900+
These ranges assume two people sharing, full board, game drives and park fees. Solo travellers should expect a single supplement of 25–50%.
Where the money actually goes
- Conservation and park fees — the Maasai Mara alone is $200 per adult per 24 hours in high season
- Accommodation, which is the single biggest variable
- Vehicle, fuel and a professional guide
- Internal flights, roughly $200–$400 per person per sector
- Drinks, tips and optional extras such as a balloon flight at around $500 per person
What raises your price fastest
Peak-season August dates, private conservancies with low guest density, light-aircraft transfers and single-occupancy rooms. Each is defensible — but if the budget is finite, they are the first levers to examine.

- Travel in green season and take the same camps for 30–40% less
- Drive the Mara instead of flying if you are comfortable with a five-hour transfer
- Trade one famous lodge for two extra nights somewhere very good
- Fill the vehicle: four sharing a private 4x4 dramatically lowers per-head cost

Guiding, above all. The difference between an average driver and an excellent guide is the difference between seeing a leopard and driving past one. After that, nights — an extra day in one park almost always beats adding another park.
What a real trip looks like
A seven-night mid-range Kenya safari with the Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli, private vehicle, full board and all park fees, typically lands between $2,600 and $3,900 per person in 2026 depending on season. Add the coast for four nights and expect $700–$1,600 more.
