The short answer

The Maasai Mara is a year-round destination — its resident lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant populations never leave. The best time to visit is July to October, when the Great Migration is in the reserve, and the best value is April, May and November, when the plains are green and rates fall well below peak. January and February sit in between: dry, hot and superb for big cats without migration-season crowds.

Excellent

Hot, dry and green after the short rains. Big cat sightings are outstanding, calving season fills the plains with prey, and camps are quieter than the migration months.

March

Good value

Warm with building humidity and the odd afternoon storm. Rates drop noticeably and you often have sightings to yourself.

April – May

Low season

Long rains. Landscapes are spectacularly green, birding peaks and rates are the year's lowest; some tracks get muddy and a few camps close.

June

Very good

Rains ease, grass is still lush and the first migration herds appear in the southern Mara from late June.

July – August

Peak: Great Migration

Over a million wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara and Talek rivers. The most dramatic wildlife spectacle on earth — book nine to twelve months ahead.

September – October

Peak, quieter

Herds are spread across the Mara with continued crossings and superb predator action, with slightly fewer vehicles than August.

November

Good value

Short rains arrive in showers rather than downpours. Herds move back south, resident game is excellent and rates soften.

December

Festive peak
