The safari-and-beach combination is the most requested trip we build, and the most frequently mis-planned. The mistake is almost always the same: too many parks, then two nights by the sea to recover from them.
The shape that works
One or two parks, then the coast. A ten-night example we run constantly: three nights Maasai Mara, two nights Amboseli with Kilimanjaro views, then five nights on the south coast at Diani. One internal flight links the halves, so nobody spends a holiday in a vehicle.
Choosing your coast
- Diani: 25km of white sand, direct flights from the Mara, best resort choice and easiest with children
- Watamu: marine national park, turtle nesting, snorkelling and a slower village atmosphere
- Lamu: dhow culture, no cars, for travellers who want character over resort comfort
- Zanzibar: Stone Town, spice farms and a second-country stamp, ideal on trips of twelve nights or more
Timing both halves
July to October pairs migration season with calm seas. January to March offers superb resident game and the clearest water of the year. Avoid the long rains in April and May for the coastal half specifically — safari still works, the beach much less so.
Practical notes
- Book the safari half first; camp availability is far tighter than resort availability
- Fly, do not drive, between safari and coast — it saves a full day each way
- Keep a soft bag for the light aircraft leg and leave heavier luggage stored in Nairobi
- Reserve dhow sails, kitesurfing and diving before arrival in high season
As a Kenyan DMC we contract both halves directly, which means one operator, one itinerary, one emergency number and no gap between the safari company and the resort. Send us your dates and we will draft the split that fits them.
